Ortega Canyon
Bear Canyon Trail
The hike starts at about 2000FT and brings us to about 3000FT. The hike is about a 5-6 mile round-trip. This is hike is rated beginning to intermediate. So long as you exercise (walk, run, bike) on a regular basis (1-2 days a week), you should be able to enjoy the hike with some effort applied. There are a couple of challenging sections. The hike takes us up a mountain ridge and in and out of forested areas. We will end up on top a mesa overlooking the San Meteo Wilderness Area. There's a great place to have lunch on top of the ridge.

Trailhead directions

From the country store walk west along the highway for 100 feet and you'll see the trail head. Hike up the trail for a couple of miles, staying on the Bear Creek trail
(veer to the right at the first sign) and at the "Four Corners" intersection go straight through and head to the top of the hill for another 1/2 mile or so. At the top there's a great place to rest and have lunch, etc.

Be sure to bring 2-3 bottles of water, a snack and sunscreen! Have fun!

Directions to Trailhead

You may hit a 1-15 minute construction delay through Spring 2009. The drive each way from church is about an hour. Take Red Hill to a left on Baker to the 405S - 5S and then exiting on the Ortega Canyon exit. Make a left over the freeway, take this road the rest of the way to the trailhead (about a 30 minute drive from this point to the parking lot across from the Country Store on the right).  You'll need to buy a National Forest Adventure Day Parking Pass for each car. They cost $5 each, so everyone please bring a $1 for that. You'll be parking across the street from a country store at which we can buy snacks & drinks and the parking passes if needed.
